The main measure taken as pest control is the fumigation.
Fumigation
Pest control fumigation is done by filling the area (or the container in case of FCL shipments) with gaseous pesticides (or fumigants) to get rid of all parasites, larvae, and insects such as wood borers and dry wood termites. This will prevent the transfer of exotic organisms.
There are several types of fumigation, IDP Cargo proceeds to the following:
- Sulfur fumigation: this is the most common process, enough to export goods to most destinations.
- Ethylen Oxide (ETO) fumigation (for Australia only): This type of fumigation is required for products exported from Indonesia to Australia. (Special Fumigation treatment for the commodity made by: Rattan, banana, grass, bamboo, or leaf)
Phytosanitary certificate
In addition to the fumigation process, some countries require a phytosanitary certificate:
- Canada,
- China,
- Europe (only for thatch (alang-alang),
- India,
- Fiji Island,
- Malaysia (only for thatch (alang-alang), requires a 128gr fumigation process),
- Mauritius Island,
- Morocco,
- New Zealand (requires a 80gr fumigation process),
- Reunion Island (for wooden bungalow, gazebo, house and for any house’s part such as decking, flooring, partitions, stairs…),
- South Africa,
- South America,
- Thailand (for all wood or botanical element),
- United Kingdom (for bamboo only),
- USA,
- Vanuatu.
ISPM 15 Treatment
International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures Published No. 15. It is special regulation for Wood Packaging Material (WPM) that all WPM have to be treated before it is used in international trade by FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations). The WPM have to be stamped with IPPC label.
ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures) regulates wood packaging materials
This is an inspection covering all wood packaging, crating and fastening materials used in a container to ensure that the wood used:
- has a reasonable moisture percentage,
- is free of bark,
- has no worms or insects inside.
As more and more countries around the world apply this F.A.O. recommendation, IDP Cargo provides the material and certification by a third party for a low cost (per inspected item fee).
